M1 Singapore Fringe Festival brought together local and international performances that are thought-provoking and challenges the Singapore audiences, as well as works that were related to feminism and the act of walking.
The concept saw in the Japanese art of suminagashi as a metaphor for the state of the issues that surround feminism—ink floating atop water that obscures what truly lies underneath the surface. Yet, there is also increasing awareness of these issues which are represented by the negative spaces between the swirls of ink, pointing to rising consciousness that the issues that needs deeper and further discussion and debate.
To respond to the act of walking, one of the key action used in Amanda’s Let’s Walk, the letter ‘L’—which resemble legs and feet—were deliberately elongated to give a sense of movement and to communicate the action of walking.
